Nutritional balance is often overlooked, leading to potential deficiencies even in an age of abundance. There is a notable trend among individuals, particularly elderly living alone, who may lean towards consuming only their preferred foods or lack adequate protein due to avoidance of meat and eggs.
Despite frequent advice promoting the importance of a diverse diet, achieving the recommended "30 different items a day" can be challenging for many. To address this, inspiration was drawn from a Japanese television program, Gatten, broadcasted by NHK. This program emphasizes focusing on main dishes and side dishes while checking ten food groups instead of solely counting individual food items. This approach has informed the design of this app.
The app categorizes foods into five protein-rich groups: meat, fish, eggs, soy products, and dairy. Additionally, oils and various vegetables, fruits, and seaweeds are vital to optimize protein efficiency.
The method is straightforward. Users are encouraged to note the ten food groups consumed daily, regardless of quantity, with a target of at least seven groups per day—ideally nine or more. Assessments are visually represented: six or fewer groups yield a red status; seven to nine groups yield green; and attaining ten groups is marked as gold (represented by a flower circle known as Hanamaru).
This process cultivates awareness of dietary balance through daily checklists following meals. The assessment framework considers both horizontal and vertical totals for a comprehensive overview of nutritional intake.
With approximately one in three individuals over 70 facing the risk of malnutrition—heightening potential health issues and care requirements—encouragement is essential for family members. Fostering a positive and health-conscious lifestyle benefits all.
